Expiry Date

You adore me today
You ask me to stay
We share a glance
lost in our happy little trance

We grin and talk nonstop
but while you gaze at me, I wait for the other shoe to drop
My happiness is always short-lived,
I am just waiting for the switch to flip

When your smiles will turn into sighs
your gaze into rolling eyes
The more time we spend
the more your patience will be spent

It's not your cross to bear, it's mine
It's the fault of my own design
It's one that I have fallen prey to before
The things you like now will soon annoy you to your core

The glances will turn sad
You won't remember the happy times we had
Just the dissatisfaction of my being
and all the times we spent disagreeing

We will slowly stop seeking the other out
With more complaints than we can count
The air will turn stale with the words that were left unsaid
I will stand and watch you leave
on the road, I have seen others seek
without much of a back glance at me

I wait for that day
preparing myself in vain
thinking that it will hurt less
if I just suppress
the joy I have with you today

The foolishness I bear
thinking that you will care
but I am just a toy in your hands
Shiny and new, dancing at your commands

something that's played with at will
till it will snap and break from within
soon to be exchanged with something better and new
but, my ability to be replaced is something I already knew
Still, I look at you with a smile
treasuring the twinkle in your eyes

knowing that you adore me today
You are asking me to stay
I will nod in your embrace and grin
waiting for the countdown to begin
